Terms of Service
Effective date: July 30, 2026 · Last updated: October 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a binding agreement between you and Harp AI LLC (Lecto) ("Lecto," "we"), governing your use of the Lecto platform at readlecto.com and related services. By creating an account or using Lecto, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you use Lecto through your institution, any written agreement between Lecto and your institution (including a Data Processing Agreement) controls where it conflicts with these Terms.
1. The service
Lecto provides a structured reading experience with retrieval practice, built from course materials an instructor supplies or selects, plus instructor tools to customize content, manage enrollment, and track completion-based credit. We may add, change, or remove features; we will not materially reduce core functionality for a paid term without notice.
2. Accounts
You must provide accurate information and keep your credentials secure; you are responsible for activity under your account. You must be at least 13 years old. Instructor accounts represent that they are authorized by their institution to set up courses and view their students' data.
3. Instructor and student responsibilities
Instructors. You represent that you are authorized by your institution to create courses, invite students, and view the progress and completion data of students enrolled in your sections. You are responsible for the materials you upload or generate and for complying with your institution's policies on student data.
Students. By enrolling in a course with a course key, you agree that your progress, practice answers, and completion data will be visible to that course's instructor and institution. You own the notes, highlights, and study cards you create. Answers to practice and exam questions become part of the education record shared with the instructor and institution.
4. Enrollment and access
- Students join a course with a course key provided by their instructor. Enrolling shares your progress and grade data with that course's instructor and institution.
- Lecto is $19.99 per student, per semester. Instructors never pay. Institutional agreements may set other terms.
5. Content and intellectual property
Third-party and openly licensed content. Some course texts derive from openly licensed materials; where they do, the underlying material remains under its own license and is attributed within the reader. Nothing in these Terms restricts any rights you have under those licenses.
The Lecto platform. The software, design, question-delivery system, and all platform features are owned by Harp AI LLC and licensed to you, not sold. You may not copy, scrape, resell, or reverse-engineer the platform.
Instructor content. Instructors retain ownership of materials they upload or author. You grant Lecto a limited license to host, process (including AI processing per the Privacy Policy), display to your enrolled students, and back up that content, solely to provide the service. You represent you have the rights to upload what you upload (your own materials, openly licensed materials, or content your institution licenses; not a publisher's test bank you don't have rights to redistribute).
Student work. Students own their own notes, highlights, and study cards. Answers to practice and exam questions are shared with the instructor and institution as education records.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to: share exam content outside your course; attempt to access other users' data or other courses' content; circumvent access controls or completion verification; use the service to harass others; upload unlawful or infringing content; probe, overload, or disrupt the service; or resell access. Instructors may not use Lecto to collect student data beyond what the product provides. We may suspend accounts that violate these Terms, with notice to the institution for enrolled students.
7. Academic integrity
Completion credit reflects the platform's records of your own activity. Falsifying completion (automation, account sharing, exploiting bugs) violates these Terms and will be reported to your instructor.
8. Privacy and student data
Our Privacy Policy is part of these Terms. In institutional contexts, the institution owns its students' education records. To the extent Lecto processes education records, Lecto is considered a school official with a legitimate educational interest under FERPA, acting under the institution's direct control and using those records only for the purposes the institution authorizes. We never sell student data or use it for advertising or AI training. Institutions may execute our Data Processing Agreement, available on request, which controls over these Terms for student data.
9. Availability and support
We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. Scheduled maintenance will avoid peak academic hours where practicable.
10. Disclaimers
The service and all content are provided "as is." We do not warrant that content is error-free (question banks are quality-checked but instructors control their course content) or that the service will meet every requirement. Educational content is not professional advice.
11. Termination
You may close your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts for material violation of these Terms (with notice to the affected institution for enrolled students). On termination, data is handled per the Privacy Policy's retention/deletion section and any applicable Data Processing Agreement.
12. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms; material changes will be notified in-product or by email at least 30 days before taking effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance. Institutional agreements are not modified by ToS updates.
October 2026: updated the description of the service (section 1), the price (section 4), and the paragraph on third-party and openly licensed content (section 5).
13. Copyright and DMCA
We respect copyright. If you believe material on Lecto infringes your copyright, send a notice under 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3) to our designated agent:
